PR Home Care offers Staying Independent, a free senior safety workshop for older adults, families, caregivers, and community groups in Raleigh, Cary, and surrounding Wake County communities.

This practical workshop helps seniors recognize everyday home safety concerns, reduce common fall risks, and build simple daily habits that support safer independence at home.

Free Senior Safety Education

Staying Independent is designed for senior communities, 55+ apartments, rehabilitation centers, churches, libraries, caregiver groups, wellness events, and lunch-and-learns.

The session is practical, easy to follow, and focused on real-life home safety concerns. Participants receive follow-along handouts, home safety tips, and simple action steps they can use at home or with a loved one.

Sessions are flexible in length — usually 30 to 45 minutes — and can be tailored to fit your organization’s schedule and audience. No special equipment or preparation is required from your organization.

Please note: This workshop is for education only. It is not a medical evaluation, physical therapy session, diagnosis, or clinical fall-risk assessment. Participants with specific health concerns should consult their healthcare provider.

What Participants Will Learn

Protecting Independence at Home

Participants learn how small home safety steps can support confidence, daily routine, and independence.

Everyday Fall Risk Awareness

Participants learn how clutter, poor lighting, rugs, cords, rushing, and unsafe footwear can affect safety at home.

Room-by-Room Home Safety

The workshop walks through entryways, hallways, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, stairs, and outdoor walking areas.

Safer Daily Habits

Participants learn practical habits such as standing slowly, pausing before walking, sitting while dressing, avoiding rushing, and keeping important items within reach.

Footwear and Mobility Awareness

Participants learn how footwear choices, worn soles, loose slippers, socks on slick floors, and mobility support concerns may affect daily safety.

When to Speak Up

Participants are encouraged to speak up about falls, near falls, dizziness, weakness, fear of falling, vision changes, or trouble using a cane or walker.

Participants Will Learn Simple Ways To:

  • Stay safer and more confident at home
  • Reduce everyday fall risks
  • Keep walkways clear and easier to navigate
  • Improve lighting and home setup
  • Choose safer footwear

Interactive Activities

Depending on the setting, Staying Independent may include simple activities that help participants stay engaged and apply the information to real-life situations.

Spot the Home Safety Concern

Participants identify common safety concerns in a sample room scenario.

Safe Pathway Check

Participants think through one pathway at home, such as bed to bathroom, front door to living room, or chair to kitchen.

Pause Before You Move

A seated or optional standing demonstration focused on slowing down before standing or walking.

Footwear Safety Discussion

Participants review safer and less safe footwear choices for daily movement at home.

My Staying Independent Action Plan

Each participant chooses one realistic safety step to take after the workshop.

Family Support Discussion

Families and caregivers learn simple ways to support safety and independence without taking over or causing conflict.

All activities are optional and can be modified for seated participation.

This workshop is education-focused, not clinical. It is designed to complement — not replace — the guidance of participants’ healthcare providers.
